Supreme Court rejects PIL seeking enforcement of Lyngdoh Committee norms on student polls

The Supreme Court connected Tuesday (January 6, 2026) dismissed a plea seeking implementation of the 2006 Lyngdoh Committee Report, which lays down the regulatory model for pupil national elections successful colleges and universities crossed the country.

The cardinal government, acting connected the directive of the apical court, had formed the Lyngdoh Committee whose study aimed to destruct "money and musculus power" from field authorities portion maintaining world standards.

A seat comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi declined to entertain the petition filed by Shiv Kumar Tripathi, observing that it lacked merit.

During the little hearing, a counsel for Mr. Tripathi said the plea sought enforcement of the committee study to guarantee just elections for students' bodies successful colleges and universities.

The CJI termed the plea a publicity involvement litigation.

The apical tribunal had accepted the committee recommendations, making them mandatory for each universities and colleges successful the country.

The committee, successful its report, had fixed the property bounds of 17 to 22 years for undergraduate students to combat assemblage elections. For postgraduate students, it had fixed the property bounds of 24 to 25 years for contesting assemblage polls.

Besides, it had suggested different regulatory measures for specified polls.
