Seven fishermen from Mayiladuthurai territory were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy connected Tuesday (January 20, 2026) nighttime for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) portion sportfishing successful the Palk Strait.

Fisheries section sources said the fishermen had ventured into the oversea from Kodiyakkarai disconnected Vedaranyam successful 2 fibre boats astir 2 p.m. connected Tuesday (January 20, 2026). The boats were intercepted astir 10 p.m. adjacent Neduntheevu.

One of the boats had 4 fishermen connected committee — Devaraj, Sridhar of Perumalpettai, and Kalaivanan and Saranraj from Pudhukuppam adjacent Sirkazhi.

The 2nd fibre vessel had 3 fishermen — Rajesh, Sathya, and Thanivel — each residents of Vanagiri.

The fishermen were taken into custody on with the boats for allegedly sportfishing crossed the maritime boundary. Though hailing from Mayiladuthurai district, the fishermen had been staying astatine Kodiyakkarai for sportfishing activities.
