HC recalls order that quashed Centre’s decision refusing to convert journalist’s PIO status to OCI

The Delhi High Court connected Thursday (May 14, 2026) recalled its bid quashing the Centre’s determination to cull writer Siddharth Varadarajan’s plea seeking conversion of his Person of Indian Origin (PIO) presumption to Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav said Mr. Varadarajan failed to disclose the beingness of a 2020 Allahabad High Court bid that granted him anticipatory bail successful a transgression lawsuit and imposed conditions, specified arsenic surrendering his passport and restricting question overseas without support from the proceedings tribunal concerned.

The tribunal besides recalled its May 13 bid asking the authorities to see an exertion by Mr. Varadarajan, a U.S. citizen, for a “return visa” and allowing him to question to Estonia betwixt May 14 and 19.

Justice Kaurav issued announcement to Mr. Varadarajan and asked him to record an affidavit successful 7 moving days to explicate his conduct.

Additional Solicitor-General Chetan Sharma, appearing for the Centre, said the worldly recovered against the petitioner was “disconcerting”. He said constabulary summons were issued to the petitioner successful the past successful narration to the transgression lawsuit and the Allahabad High Court bid was “conveniently suppressed” from the court.
