The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a stern informing to nutrient concern operators against utilizing the connection 'tea' for herbal infusions and plant-based blends not derived from Camellia sinensis, terming it a lawsuit of misbranding and misleading practices nether the law.
The directive, issued connected December 24, comes aft the regulator recovered respective nutrient concern operators (FBOs) selling products, specified arsenic 'Rooibos tea', 'herbal tea' and 'flower tea', nary of which are obtained from the Camellia sinensis plant.
According to FSSAI regulations, the word 'tea' tin lone beryllium utilized connected packaging and labelling if the beverage is derived from Camellia sinensis.
This includes variants specified arsenic Kangra tea, greenish beverage and instant tea.
"Such plant-based oregon herbal infusions oregon blends, which are not derived from Camellia sinensis, bash not suffice to beryllium named arsenic tea," the FSSAI clarified.
The violation, it said, amounts to misleading and misbranding nether the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The regulator has directed each FBOs, including those engaged successful e-commerce, manufacturing, packing, marketing, import oregon merchantability of specified products, to comply with nutrient information regulations.
