Farmers, trade unions stage protest in Pudukkottai against ‘anti-people’ policies of Centre

Members of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and assorted commercialized unions staged a sit-in protestation successful Pudukkottai connected Wednesday, condemning the “anti-people policies” of the Union government.

The objection marked the 5th day of the enactment of the Morcha successful the district.

Wearing achromatic armbands, farmers and labour national members gathered adjacent Annasilai junction and held a dharna pressing for a bid of argumentation rollbacks and payment measures. The protestation was led by SKM territory coordinator T. Selvarasu and TOMSU territory president A. Rethinam.

TOMSU territory caput K. Ganapathi, CITU territory caput A. Sridhar and AITUC territory caput P. Jeevanandam were among those present.

Addressing the protest, All India Agricultural Workers Union State president and CPI(M) MLA M. Chinnadurai, Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association State vice-president K. Ulaganathan and nationalist committee subordinate M. Madhavan, criticised the Centre’s policies, alleging that they adversely affected farmers and cultivation labourers. More than 300 participants from assorted unions and farmers bodies took part.

The protesters demanded minimum enactment terms for each cultivation produce, waiver of loans availed by farmers and workplace labourers, withdrawal of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2020, and scrapping of the determination to merge 44 labour payment laws into 4 labour codes.

Other demands included filling vacant authorities posts, expanding MGNREGS to 200 days with a regular wage of ₹600, restoring the aged pension scheme, expediting the Cauvery – Vaigai – Gundar stream linkage project, ensuring compensation for crop-insured farmers straight from the government, and providing uninterrupted h2o proviso to tail-end farmers successful the Grand Anicut region.
