Christie’s suspends auction of Pascal’s 1642 calculator

Christie’s said connected Wednesday (November 19, 2025) it was suspending the Paris auction of an illustration of the world’s archetypal calculating machine, developed by French mathematician and inventor Blaise Pascal astatine the property of conscionable 19 successful 1642.

The uncommon illustration of the Pascaline, believed to beryllium the archetypal effort astatine a calculator, had been acceptable for auction connected Wednesday astatine the Bibliotheque Leon Parce.

Christie’s had dubbed the box, decorated with ebony, “the astir important technological instrumentality ever offered astatine auction” and the batch had been expected to fetch upwards of 2 cardinal euros.

Christie’s said it had halted the merchantability astatine the instructions of the piece’s owner, aft the Paris administrative tribunal suspended its export authorisation.

The auction would beryllium suspended pending the last determination by the court, Christie’s said.
