As six Assam communities seek ST status, seven more eye OBC list

Less than 24 hours aft the Assam Cabinet approved a study by a Group of Ministers connected granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) presumption for six communities, a process was initiated for the inclusion of 7 different communities successful the Central database of Other Backward Classes (OBC).

These 7 communities are Bhar/Rajbhar, Bhujel, Bishnupriya Manipuri, Kiran Sheikh, Newar, Sabar, and Satnami.

He said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has thrown his value down the inclusion of the 7 communities successful the Central OBC list. “The Centre is committed to granting law rights to the eligible communities, but each documents request to beryllium verified properly,” helium said.

The NCBC caput said that the concerns of 2 different communities successful the OBC list, Matak and Moran, would besides beryllium examined. During the hearing, the representatives of these 2 communities underscored their long-pending request to beryllium recognised arsenic STs.

The different communities demanding ST presumption are Adivasis (“Tea Tribes”), Chutias, Koch-Rajbongshis, and Tai Ahoms. The Koch-Rajbongshis were temporarily granted ST presumption successful January 1996.

The Assam authorities is acceptable to array the study of the Group of Ministers connected the ST presumption for the six communities successful the ongoing wintertime league of the 126-member State Assembly. The State’s tribes, including the Bodos, Mishings, Karbis, and Dimasas, are opposed to the determination to grow the ST database unless their rights and privileges are protected.
