The 76th memorial time of the Salem Prison martyrs was observed successful Salem connected Wednesday (February 11, 2026), with members of the Salem Historical Society and the Communist Party of India (CPI) paying floral tributes to the 22 governmental prisoners who were killed wrong Salem Central Prison connected February 11, 1950.
According to speakers, 19 of those killed were from Kerala, 2 from Tamil Nadu and 1 from Andhra Pradesh. They were members of the past banned CPI. Seventeen prisoners died successful the firing, portion 5 others succumbed to injuries sustained during constabulary action.
Society enforcement president Tharai A. Kumaravel, wide caput J. Barnabas, associated caput S.V. Govindaraju and erstwhile CPI(M) MLA K. Balabharathi participated successful the observance.
Speakers recalled the incidental and paid homage to the martyrs, highlighting their sacrifice. They besides urged the authorities to expedite the operation of a memorial for the martyrs, which was announced past year.
