In a large taxonomic revision of bush frogs, the Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has recorded 13 new-to-science taxon of amphibians from the northeastern portion of the country.

These caller taxon person been described successful a survey published successful the latest contented of Vertebrate Zoology, an planetary journal. The authors of the survey are Bitupan Boruah and Abhijit Das of the WII, and V. Deepak, associated with museums successful Germany and the United Kingdom.

According to the authors, this is the highest fig of vertebrate taxon described successful a azygous work successful implicit a decennary from India.

Of these 13 caller species, six were recorded from Arunachal Pradesh, 3 from Meghalaya, and 1 each from Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur. Seven taxon were recovered successful the protected areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, portion 1 was recorded successful a community-protected wood of Nagaland’s Khonoma village.

“Bush frogs, presently successful the genera Raorchestes and Philautus, are poorly documented from northeast India erstwhile compared to the Western Ghats of southwestern India... Before the study, determination were 82 taxon of bush frogs known from India, 15 of which were from the northeastern region,” the survey read.

The six taxon recorded from Arunachal Pradesh are Eaglenest bush frog, Arunachal bush frog, ample bush frog, Dibang Valley bush frog, pointy-nosed bush frog, and eastbound bush frog. Two of these were registered from the Namdapha Tiger Reserve, and 1 each from Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary and Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Narpuh bush frog, Mawsynram bush frog, and Boulenger bush frog were recorded from Meghalaya. The archetypal was recorded successful the Narpuh Wildlife Sanctuary and the 2nd successful Mawsynram, 1 of the world’s rainiest places, portion the 3rd was named aft G.A. Boulenger, an authorization connected amphibians during the British regularisation successful India.

“The integrated acoustics, genetics, and morphology of the amphibians entailed revisiting the presumption of century-old depository collections from the Indo-Burma region,” 1 of the researchers said.

“It was based connected a ample sampling attack covering 81 localities successful 8 States, including 25 protected areas. It besides revised the organisation of known species.

A important facet of the survey was that it overcame 3 conservation shortfalls – Linnean (naming taxon earlier they are lost), Wallacean (knowing the distribution), and Darwinian (providing evolutionary relationships).
